From the Land to the Wardrobe

Janelle Wawia is an award-winning Anishinaabe artist, furrier, and fashion designer from Red Rock Indian Band. Self-taught and multidisciplinary, her work spans runway fashion, hand beading, jewellery, acrylic painting, hide tanning, and fur work — all rooted in her deep connection to the land and her family’s traplines. Featured in Elle Canada and The Kit. Runway designer at Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival, Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto, and ModeCanadaRocks. Recipient of the Barbara Laronde Award for Emerging Female Indigenous Artist in Northern Ontario. Twitter Emoji Designer for National Indigenous Awareness Month. Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. Her work is about women. About land. About what it means to still be here.
